NSAC Launches Marketing Campaign 2006

Work on the 2006 marketing campaign is really moving ahead. NSAC is again working with marketing agency, Allura Communications & Marketing, who were successful in the competition for a three-year marketing services contract for our marketing strategy.

You will notice a few changes to the marketing program from last year, the most obvious being the evolution of the NSAC brand tag line. After much discussion and feedback and given the expansion of programs planned for the next few years an evolution of the NSAC brand positioning was recommended.

The “NSAC. Embrace Your World” theme is aimed at allowing this extension and at building on our science programs by attracting bright young people who are passionate about solving problems in the wider world around them. NSAC will help students make a difference because our hands on, highly interactive approach, is both experiential and educational. Click here for the complete article.

Where are they now?

Here is your chance to let other alumni know where you are and what you’re doing! Please send us an email at alumni@nsac.ca and let us know what you’re up to – you just might be featured in an upcoming issue of Alumni e-News. We look forward to hearing from you! Please send along a picture if possible!

Ryan Barrett, from Belmont, PEI completed his B.Sc(Agr.) in Animal Science in 2002 and then attended the University of Guelph where he completed an M.Sc in Animal Science (Animal Breeding) in 2004. He is a proud four year resident of Fraser House and is currently living in Guelph, Ontario.

Current Employment: At the moment I have two jobs. I work full time for Jersey Canada, the national breed association for Jersey dairy cattle.

I am Publications Editor, with specific responsibility for the creation of the breed magazine, The Canadian Jersey Breeder. Also, I work in my spare time as the Secretary-Manager of the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society, the national breed association for Milking Shorthorn dairy cattle. At times, life is quite busy, but I love my jobs!

The Future: Who knows! I only know it will be in the dairy industry. I hope to return to PEI at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Favourite NSAC memories: AC Christian Fellowship coffeehouses in "The Barn", flipping sheep, house crawls in Fraser House, and spending time with closest friends, who have become life-long friends.

What did you like most about NSAC?: I liked that I had challenging, interesting professors that were committed to teaching, not just publishing papers. I loved the closeness of the campus community, the unique events (Woodsmen weekend, Rugby 7's, etc). Finally, I loved meeting new friends, many of whom I still talk to regularly today.

You can reach Ryan at 202-8 Speedvale Ave W, Guelph, Ontario, Canada N1H 1J4 Ph: (519) 824-2119 E-Mail: milking.shorthorn@gmail.com

NSAC Alumni - Embracing Their World

Our NSAC alumni community is full of inspirational, passionate and dedicated graduates who are doing wonderful, unique and interesting things in their careers.

In an effort to reinforce our new tagline and to let our current students and prospective students know what an education at NSAC can provide for them, we would like to profile an alumnus, on a monthly basis, on the front page of the NSAC website.

Beginning this month, these profiles will demonstrate how NSAC alumni are ‘embracing their world’ and making a difference. The profiles will be highly visible and easily accessible from the NSAC homepage.

If you would like to be profiled or know of someone who would be a good candidate to profile, please forward this information to the alumni office at alumni@nsac.ca. We look forward to learning more about the activities of our alumni membership.

Homecoming Weekend 2006

Congratulations to classes celebrating a milestone reunion year in 2006!

Alumni are invited to come home to NSAC this October 20th and 21st to reunite and commemorate this special occasion. Many exciting events are being planned for you and your classmates to ensure a memorable NSAC Homecoming experience. We extend a particular welcome to our honour year classes ending in 1 and 6.

As part of Homecoming 2006, a Blue & Gold Champagne Awards Brunch will be held to honour the many accomplishments of our alumni membership. Guest speaker, NSAC’s first President, Dr. Philip Hicks, will also address alumni and provide his thoughts on what the future holds for the university. The program will also include the presentation of Class Shield awards as well as the presentation of 60-year pins to the Class of 1946.

Another new feature to this year’s schedule includes the Alumni "Back to School" program. Are you curious about what types of educational programming we currently offer? Recent research developments and new facilities? Meet members of the staff, students and former classmates as you go "Back to School." The departments of Business & Social Sciences, Plant & Animal Sciences and Continuing & Distance Education will be open. In addition, the past present and future of the NSAC Engineering Department will be on display at the MacRae Library. The complete Homecoming schedule is available at

Engineering Display at Homecoming Weekend

This year, the Department of Engineering at the NSAC is treating the public to a slice of its past and a look into its future as part of Homecoming weekend.

The Department has organized a display entitled "Engineering at the NSAC - past, present and future" to be located in the lobby of the MacRae Library on the NSAC campus. It will run from Friday, October 20th throughout the weekend.

Dr. Alex Georgallas, curator of the display, is a professor in the Department of Engineering. "It is exciting to look in both directions - to the past and to the future - to see a path leading to a better world", says Dr. Georgallas.

The display will focus on three main topics: Alternative Energy and Biofuels; Precision Agriculture; and courses and programs offered by the Department of Engineering.

Athletic Department Update

The 2006-07 year has started with an excellent group of first year student-athletes appearing at the Langille Athletic Centre. Coaches have done a good job in recruiting and now preparing athletes for their respective seasons. New coaching faces include Trevor Dillman and Scott Read with the woodsmen, Rae MacInnis with Mens Rugby, Richard Jacobs and Kian Tracey as assistants with men's soccer and Donnie MacGregor as Head Coach for Men's Basketball. Returning coaches include Claude Caldwell, Jen Cameron and Laura Caldwell with women's soccer, Dane Brown with Men's Soccer, Laura Lee MacInnis with Women's Rugby, Loretta Totten-Higgins and Dave Fisher with Women's and Men's Volleyball, and Fred Works with Women's Basketball.

The fall varsity sports are almost over, as both rugby and soccer play-offs are scheduled for the Oct. 28-29 weekend. Recreational events have been popular with kayaking, softball and Sunday Night Rec having good participation. Hockey Intramurals have started and the numbers look good for that activity as well.
